Frauen und Kinder stehen zwischen Pflanzen im Tschad
In Chad, refugees from Sudan find protection from war and violence. But many are traumatized and urgently need help to come to terms with what they have experienced. humedica supports them with psychosocial care, safe spaces and medical assistance - especially for women and children.

The situation on the ground:

Since a civil war broke out in Sudan in April 2023 between the Sudanese military and the so-called task forces, millions of people have been on the run. Thousands are trying to escape the terror by fleeing to Chad. Here they arrive in reception camps after having undertaken dangerous border crossings and escape routes. It is mainly women, children and elderly people who have found refuge in the Aboutengué camp. However, many of them continue to experience violence, sexual assault and exploitation not only while fleeing, but also in the emergency shelters. They suffer from trauma and live with depression and anxiety disorders. They cannot come to terms with what they have experienced, nor do they have any hope for the future.

This is how humedica helps:

Together with its partner Agence de Développement Economique et Sociale (ADES), humedica is helping refugees and host communities to come to terms with their experiences in the following ways:

Contact points are set up where those affected can find a sympathetic ear and possible further support measures.
Psychologists treat people with psychological stress.
People with serious mental illnesses are referred to psychiatric facilities.
In the refugee camp, both health workers and teachers receive further training on mental health issues.
Various trainings aim to raise people's awareness of mental illness and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness to this day.
Through therapeutic measures and the distribution of hygiene kits, a protected environment is to be created for children, women and the elderly.
People who have been victims of sexualized violence receive the necessary psychological and medical treatment.
