When the decades-long civil war broke out in Sri Lanka in 1983, Wolfgang Groß, co-founder and then Managing Director of humedica, traveled to the crisis region just a few days later. He made his first contacts there and resolutely sought ways to help refugees - the beginning of humedica's involvement in Sri Lanka. in 1993, this became an independent organization with local management and staff. Since then, humedica Lanka has been providing disaster relief, educational work and medical care on the ground.
On his first trip to Brazil, Wolfgang Groß brings back medicines for a hospital run by the Franciscan Sisters of Dillingen in the south of the country. There he met Sister Beatriz - an encounter that led to a close partnership and the founding of humedica Brazil in 1994. Since then, the sister organization has been primarily committed to helping disadvantaged children and young people, running a day care centre with educational and leisure activities as well as disaster relief in a region affected by natural hazards.
The independent partner organization humedica Social Community Trust (humedica India) was founded in September 2013 in order to be able to respond more quickly and effectively to disasters in Asia. Initially, the focus was on educational and social projects. Later, a health center and programs to support women were added. In addition to disaster preparedness, humedica India also provides rapid and effective emergency aid following natural disasters.
When the Taliban came to power in August 2021, the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan worsened. Unemployment, inflation, drought and natural disasters are leading to an ongoing crisis. A country office was set up in Kabul in May 2022 to strengthen project work on the ground and better identify needs. Since then, we have been implementing aid measures - including medical care, training for health workers and support for refugees and earthquake victims.
One of humedica's largest country programs developed from the first emergency aid missions after the drought disasters of the 1980s and 90s. Since registering as an international NGO in 2010, the country office in Ethiopia has been implementing projects in health, education, water supply and livelihood security - from kindergartens and medical care in refugee camps to drought relief.
Humedica has been supporting refugees and people in need in Lebanon with medical aid and relief supplies since 2012. In the Bekaa Valley, the team cares for Syrian refugee families and Lebanese in need - including with a mobile treatment bus. In addition to its medical work, humedica also responded to crises such as the explosion in Beirut in 2020 and recent war events. Humedica has been registered as an international NGO in the country since 2022 and also manages projects in Syria from there.
Humedica has been supporting Ukraine with relief supplies since 1989. Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression in February 2022, aid has been expanded - including medical equipment and mobile clinics in rural regions. Since 2023, we have been working with our own country office on the ground, providing basic healthcare, psychosocial care, reconstruction of healthcare facilities and continuous support for our partners throughout the country.
