Since mid-December, persistent and unusually heavy rainfall has flooded large parts of Mozambique. Rivers burst their banks, entire areas were flooded, roads destroyed and villages cut off from the outside world. Hundreds of thousands of people were affected by the consequences, many lost their homes, their belongings - and their livelihoods. At least 125 people lost their lives as a result of the floods.

The disaster hit people who depend on agriculture particularly hard. Flooded fields can no longer be cultivated, harvests were lost and a large proportion of livestock died in the masses of water. At the same time, the damaged road network is making access to aid and supplies to the affected regions considerably more difficult.

Rapid assistance through local partnerships

humedica responded to the emergency situation at an early stage and provided emergency aid on the ground together with the local partner organization ForAfrika. ForAfrika has been active in Mozambique for many years and was able to start providing support quickly thanks to stockpiled emergency supplies.

Aid measures initially focused on the particularly affected province of Sofala, especially on emergency camps in the districts around Búzi. The Maputo and Gaza regions were also affected by the floods and were included in the planning.

Distribution of food and relief supplies

In the past few days, ForAfrika has distributed food and relief supplies such as tarpaulins and blankets for temporary shelter. This has enabled families who had lost everything in the floods and are unable to provide for themselves to be supported. This included many households headed by women and elderly people.

Ongoing challenges

Although initial relief measures have been implemented, the situation in Mozambique remains tense. In the province of Sofala alone, tens of thousands of families have been affected by the floods. Large areas of agricultural land have been damaged or completely destroyed, as has important infrastructure. Further rainfall could exacerbate the situation again.

humedica is continuing to monitor developments closely and is in close contact with local partners in order to provide further support if necessary.

Thank you for your support
