People stand with water canisters at the drinking water point

At 8 a.m., Takisha* is already at the water point - she wants to be the first today. After about an hour, a truck arrives with the precious delivery: drinking water. Takisha has brought five canisters with her. One by one, she holds them under the tap. Slowly they fill up. Each canister holds 20 liters, two of which are reserved for her goats. She is happy that she now has enough water to supply not only her family but also the animals. It wasn't always like this.

Takisha over the drinking water point

A daily battle for water

Takisha lives in Lengarde, a village in Samburu County, Kenya. There has been too little rain in the region for years. So she used to have to walk to the river every day to fetch water. She would leave her house at 7:00 am with only a 20-liter jerry can and return home around 11:00 am. Because of the long distance, she no longer had time to look after her goats and take care of other household chores.

Thanks to your help: clean water within reach

Now clean water is just a few minutes' walk from Takisha's house - a huge relief for her and the other women in the village. "I am very grateful for this gift," says Takisha about the drinking water point. A truck with a large water tank supplies more than 400 households every day. Around 2,400 people in ten villages now have access to clean water. Find out more about the project.
