Hawi has a future thanks to your donation

Hawi* is happy. The fact that he can go to school today is thanks to humedica's donors. Hawi is nine years old. He lives with his mother Birtukan in Bishoftu, a town about 40 km south of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. He cannot speak and has long had difficulty sitting or standing independently. He has been diagnosed with autism, cerebral palsy and a vitamin D deficiency.

Thanks to donations from Germany, he is now receiving physiotherapy. This is helping him to sit and stand again. His vitamin D deficiency is also being treated. Hawi is making significant progress. And most importantly, he can even go back to school. For the first time, he experiences community - and enjoys spending the school day with other children.

Hawi's father left his mother when she was pregnant. Since then, Birtukan has been left alone with the responsibility - with no support, no family. "I used to struggle to feed him properly and had to wash his clothes without soap," says Birtukan.

Those days are over now. Today, she can finally cook her son nutritious meals and take better care of him. Thanks to humedica's aid programs, the family receives food such as pasta, flour and oil. And thanks to humedica's support, Birtukan can now take better care of her son. "I used to work as a day laborer. Every day when I went to work, I had to lock Hawi in the house with a heavy heart," she says.

humedica helped her to establish a new professional foothold - one that enables her to be there for Hawi. "I received training in how to set up a business - as well as a little start-up capital," she says. "I was able to rent a small store with it. I sell traditional drinks and boiled potatoes and beans there. That gives me my own income - and a bit of independence." She can now also pay for Hawi's treatment.

Birtukan is very grateful to humedica's donors. "This help has changed our lives," she says happily.
