Kinder in einem Innenhof in Äthiopien
Raising children and giving the whole family a future—that’s not easy for many parents in Ethiopia. Single parents, in particular, have a hard time. Since they usually have no regular income, if a family member falls ill, they face financial ruin. Through humedica’s comprehensive family assistance program, support is provided to the families who need it most.

The Situation on the Ground

For many children in Ethiopia, going to school and being able to learn is not something they can take for granted. Poverty, hunger, lack of income, and a shortage of drinking water force many children to start working at an early age or to leave their families. Without a school education, however, they lose the chance to break free from the cycle of poverty.

Most parents work as day laborers without a steady income or social security. About 41% of households in humedica’s family programs have less than 25 euros per month—not enough for adequate nutrition or medical care. At the same time, schools lack clean drinking water, hygiene facilities, and healthy school meals, which further jeopardizes the children’s development.

Amina's story is an example of how humedica's support works in Ethiopia. She received food and hygiene packages as well as training to set up her own business. She now runs her own small business selling clothes she has sewn herself. This enables her to provide for herself and her family independently.
