When even getting to the doctor is a challenge

Saman* lives in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s largest city. He is married and has two children. His daily life is difficult: heart problems and nerve pain in his leg limit his mobility. He cannot walk without assistive devices. He has very little space at home; he sleeps on the floor next to the small kitchen.

Getting medical care is a major challenge for him. He could hardly make the trip on his own. He can barely afford the costs either.

Saman is not alone in this situation. In the projectareas in Colombo, Jaffna, and Badulla, health clinics are difficult for many people to reach. Long distances and unaffordable transportation costs mean that illnesses often go undiagnosed or untreated. The elderly, people with chronic illnesses, and low-income families are particularly affected.

Medical care that Saman can access

To ensure Saman can get to the mobile health clinic, he is picked up for free and then brought back home. This support is what makes it possible for him to access treatment in the first place.

At the clinic, his health is regularly monitored. He receives medication and medical advice on how to take better care of himself. Since he began visiting the mobile clinic, his heart condition has become more stable. He has received an orthosis for his foot—a device that provides support and stabilization.

This is how humedica helps in Sri Lanka with mobile clinics and temporary health stations: Patients receive medical examinations, medication, and preventive care services. They learn how to recognize illnesses early and take preventive measures to maintain their health. If further treatment is necessary, they are referred to other facilities. For seriously ill patients, home visits are provided as needed. Psychosocial services complement the medical care.

A Place for Connection and a Listening Ear

For Saman, the clinic means more than just health checkups and medication. Here, he gets a simple meal and meets other men. He can talk about what’s weighing on him and experience a sense of community outside the cramped space where he lives.

These encounters are important to him. At the clinic, his complaints and concerns are heard. He is seen as a person—with his own worries and his own hopes for his life.

His wish for the future is simple: to be able to live in peace without being a burden to his family.
