Ärztin und Krankenpflegerin bei der Arbeit in Sri Lanka
Just popping to the doctor or getting treatment – for many people in Sri Lanka, this is not something that can be taken for granted. Access to basic medical care and psychological support is particularly lacking in rural areas and disadvantaged neighbourhoods. humedica brings aid directly to the people.

The situation on site

In the regions of Colombo, Jaffna and Badulla, many people face major obstacles when it comes to accessing health services:

For many families, the nearest health centre is miles away. Transport costs money – money that is often needed for food or other essential expenses. As a result, illnesses often go undiagnosed or untreated.

The situation is particularly difficult for:

  • Elderly and chronically ill people
  • People with mental health issues or trauma
  • Families in difficult economic situations

In regions marked by past conflicts, many people suffer from psychosocial stress. Mental illness is often taboo and is treated late or not at all. At the same time, there is a lack of knowledge about prevention, early detection and how to respond appropriately in health crises.
