The situation of many families in Sri Lanka is difficult: many parents have no fixed income and have to see how they can make ends meet on a daily basis. The economic crisis since 2022 is driving up food costs. Women earning a single income and their families are particularly hard hit. In addition, many of the women come from so-called problem neighborhoods and face great difficulties in their everyday lives: drugs and alcohol are widespread here, some men gamble away their entire income and many women experience domestic violence. In order to provide for their families and become independent from their husbands, they need their own income.
