After the devastating cyclone Ditwah, many families in Sri Lanka are still struggling with the consequences of the disaster. In addition to destroyed homes and lost livelihoods, trauma, stress and insecurity are a burden on people's everyday lives. humedica supports children, adults and local aid workers with psychosocial help, strengthens health stations and helps women in particular to build up new prospects and incomes.

Current situation in Sri Lanka

Months after tropical storm Ditwah in November 2025, the effects are still clearly noticeable in the Badulla district. Floods and landslides have destroyed numerous houses and transport routes, made families homeless and fundamentally changed the everyday lives of many people. Those affected are still living in emergency shelters or trying to rebuild their lives under difficult conditions.

In addition to the material damage, many people are suffering from the psychological consequences of the disaster. Children are showing signs of anxiety and stress, while adults are struggling with loss, a lack of income opportunities and worries about their future. Local aid workers are also under enormous strain. At the same time, psychosocial support services are only available to a limited extent in the affected regions.

At the same time, humedica is working to make the local health system more resilient to future disasters. In rural areas in particular, many health stations are particularly vulnerable due to outdated infrastructure, limited resources and a lack of disaster preparedness. Together with local partners, targeted measures are therefore being implemented to ensure medical care even in times of crisis.

How humedica helps

Together with its sister organisation humedica Lanka, humedica is supporting the reconstruction and stabilisation of the affected communities with a comprehensive psychosocial aid project. The aim is to help people process what they have experienced and strengthen their resilience for future crises.

Psychosocial first aid as well as counselling and group sessions for children and adults to cope with stress and the consequences of trauma
Establishment of child-friendly shelters and training for teachers and volunteers so that traumatised children can be identified and supported at an early stage
Establishment of self-help groups and income opportunities for particularly affected women, for example through poultry farming, tailoring or home gardens
Equipping and strengthening emergency shelters so that they remain safe havens for affected families
Strengthening disaster preparedness in the health sector: improving the structural safety of two hospitals, training medical staff and providing better emergency equipment
Promoting cooperation between health facilities, disaster management authorities and communities, and raising public awareness of disaster preparedness

How you can help

With your donation, you enable psychosocial support, safe shelters for children and new income prospects for affected families.

With 28 euros, you can provide individual psychosocial counseling for a child in need. You help them to alleviate their fears and cope better with stressful experiences.
With 48 euros you enable a self-help group session for 12 to 15 affected women. You empower women to share their experiences, support each other and develop new coping strategies.
With 143 euros you can provide a starter kit to build up a small source of income for an affected household - for example for poultry farming, tailoring, horticulture or small-scale food production.
