On the night of September 1, 2025, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook the province of Kunar in eastern Afghanistan. Entire villages were destroyed, roads were impassable and aftershocks made rescue work even more difficult. People are sleeping in the open, women and children often crammed together in stuffy tents. There is a lack of food, water and warming protective materials. The World Food Program warns of a massive humanitarian disaster. The UN warns that there could be more victims in winter, as many people will then be cut off from the outside world.
According to government figures, over 2,200 people lost their lives and almost 4,000 were injured (as of September 7). Around 7,000 houses have been destroyed. It is one of the worst earthquakes in Afghanistan's history.
On September 4, there were again strong aftershocks, which were also felt in Kabul and in the neighboring countries of India and Pakistan.
We are in close contact with our country office in Afghanistan and with local partner organisations in order to accurately assess the most urgent needs of those affected.
