Current situation in Afghanistan

On the night of September 1, 2025, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook the province of Kunar in eastern Afghanistan. Entire villages were destroyed, roads were impassable and aftershocks made rescue work even more difficult. People are sleeping in the open, women and children often crammed together in stuffy tents. There is a lack of food, water and warming protective materials. The World Food Program warns of a massive humanitarian disaster. The UN warns that there could be more victims in winter, as many people will then be cut off from the outside world.

According to government figures, over 2,200 people lost their lives and almost 4,000 were injured (as of September 7). Around 7,000 houses have been destroyed. It is one of the worst earthquakes in Afghanistan's history.

On September 4, there were again strong aftershocks, which were also felt in Kabul and in the neighboring countries of India and Pakistan.

How humedica helps

We are in close contact with our country office in Afghanistan and with local partner organisations in order to accurately assess the most urgent needs of those affected. Shortly after the earthquake, humedica was able to implement initial relief measures and gradually expand its support. We are continuously reviewing how best to support people in the coming weeks and months.

The relief efforts to date include:

Rapid emergency aid for particularly affected families: distribution of blankets and cooking utensils so that people can maintain their basic needs despite their homes being destroyed.
Distribution of emergency kits for everyday use: families receive important household items such as kitchen utensils, blankets, sleeping mats and other urgently needed materials.
Distribution of tents, additional blankets and water filters
