Millions of Afghans have been seeking protection in neighboring Pakistan for decades - from war, violence and political persecution. The systematic deportation of Afghan nationals began at the end of 2023. In 2025 alone, around one million people returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan - often without possessions, exhausted and without prospects.
At the same time, new battles in the border region are exacerbating the situation. Air strikes and battles are repeatedly taking place along the more than 2,600-kilometre-long border. Residential areas have been hit, civilians killed - many families are fleeing again.
In total, since the end of 2023, over 5 million people are currently on the run within Afghanistan. In addition to the returnees, more and more internally displaced people are also reaching the eastern provinces of Nangarhar, Kunar and Laghman. The already weak infrastructure is overburdened.
For many, Afghanistan is a home without a livelihood - some are entering the country for the first time. Many live in makeshift, overcrowded dwellings, others wait for tents. There is a lack of almost everything: protection from the weather, sleeping facilities, clean water, food and medical care.
humedica has already supported the returnees with urgently needed emergency financial aid and important relief supplies such as tents, blankets and water filters. The humedica country office is continuously reviewing measures for long-term support with local partners.
Basic relief supplies: Distribution of tents, blankets and water filters so that families can initially find shelter and have access to clean drinking water.
Direct aid for those in particular need of protection: Financial aid, for example for families with children or people with disabilities for essentials such as food, cooking utensils and visits to the doctor.
Strengthening healthcare: In regions with many returnees, we want to support or expand existing healthcare facilities.
