People in Pakistan are repeatedly hit by the forces of nature: the south of the country is affected by drought for most of the year. Then, in late summer, the only monsoon-like rainfall usually occurs. Almost every year, large volumes of water seek their way from the mountains to the Indus, which is an important lifeline for the country. On the dry soils, the water has nowhere to drain away and takes the livelihoods of thousands of people with it every year. They are usually left completely destitute: crops are destroyed, livestock is washed away by the floods and drinking water is contaminated. People had to struggle particularly hard with the floods of 2022 and their consequences. humedica is working with the village communities in the regions of Khipro, Sanghar and Sind to develop early warning systems, disaster plans and risk analyses and is training people in first aid courses.
