Education opens doors—but many children in Niger lack even the basic necessities for attending school. humedica supports refugee and local children with school supplies, food, clothing, and targeted support so they can learn, grow, and shape their future.

Current Situation in Niger

Violence, displacement, and the consequences of the climate crisis shape the lives of many families in Niger. Particularly in the Tillia and Tchintabaraden regions, numerous people are seeking refuge from armed conflicts in the border areas. Many families have been forced to leave their homes and have little more than what they were able to carry with them as they fled.

Children suffer particularly from this situation. They often lack sufficient food, clothing, or basic school supplies. As a result, many are unable to attend school regularly or keep up with their lessons. At the same time, malnutrition increases the risk of developmental delays and health problems.

Since the military coup in 2023, the humanitarian situation has worsened further. Rising food prices and increasing poverty make it difficult for families to provide for their children’s basic needs. Many parents face the difficult decision every day of whether to buy food or enable their children to attend school.

How does humedica help?

Together with its local partner Adkoul, humedica helps refugee and local children meet their basic needs, attend school regularly, and help shape their own futures.

Provision of learning kits containing workbooks, pens, and other classroom supplies
Raising parents' awareness of the importance of a school education and regular school attendance
Providing clothing, shoes, and blankets to refugee children who are particularly vulnerable
Establishment of student councils at five schools to promote student involvement and participation
Providing nutrient-rich supplementary food for young children to treat malnutrition
Conducting screenings for the early detection of malnutrition and undernutrition
Distribution of food packages to schoolchildren in particular need and their families
Implementation of all measures in an accessible manner and targeted support for children with disabilities

For €10, a child receives a set of school supplies for one school year (includes: 3 notebooks, 200 pages each; 5 blue ballpoint pens; 2 rulers; 10 pencils; 10 erasers; 1 backpack, 1 slate).
