For many children in Ethiopia, going to school and being able to learn is not a matter of course. Poverty, hunger, lack of income and inadequate drinking water supplies force many children to start working at an early age or leave their families. Without an education, however, they lose the chance to escape the cycle of poverty.
Most parents work as day labourers without a steady income or social security. Around 41% of households in humedica's family programmes have less than 25 euros per month – too little for adequate nutrition or medical care. At the same time, schools lack clean drinking water, hygiene and healthy school meals, which further jeopardises the children's development.
Amina's story is an example of how humedica's support works in Ethiopia. She received food and hygiene packages as well as training to set up her own business. She now runs her own small business selling clothes she has sewn herself. This enables her to provide for herself and her family independently.
Family support at the Addis Ababa and Bishoftu locations forms an all-round package that enables parents to create a new livelihood for themselves and their families in the long term through a stable income and thus break the cycle of poverty:
Support for families with everyday hygiene products
With 5 euros you can take out health insurance for an entire family for one year
With 45 euros, 5 children receive all the necessary teaching materials for one school year
With 160 euros a family receives the starting capital for their own business (e.g. sewing machine, tables, shelves, coal stove, refrigerator)
With 2,500 euros, 75 adults can be empowered through training to start their own business
